Credit Card Debt Advice

By Mike Thereon, January 22, 2009

We picked out a story that brings up most common denominators on which your personal success may be built. It may take you up to 5 years depending on the gravity of debt, but a longer or shorter period of time is not ruled out. The first thing you do when there's a load of past due bills and no chance to pay due to the huge interest rate and penalty fees is go to a credit counseling service company for a debt settlement plan.

The relief doesn't come in a day of course, but an individually worked-out repayment plan will help you in the long run. Beware of what company you work with. A certain percentage of credit counselors who claim they work on a non-profit basis and promise fast and simple relief are scam-artists. They'll charge a mountain of up-front fees and disappear with your money for good.

Search for certified only consumer credit counseling agencies that offer a broad array of services covering credit card debt problems, bankruptcy, housing, basic financial management and credit education.

Once you've arrived on the trustworthy agency, just let them create a debt settlement plan for you and follow it diligently. Forget about all credit cards (especially new applications) or leave one in better standing open not to erase credit history completely.

The second and most important stage in working over debt settlement is to learn your mistakes and adjust attitude to credit cards. Train to be a disciplined cardholder who never carries balances whatever the circumstances and uses no more credit that he/she can actually pay for. The reward is thousands of dollars saved on APRs and fees, free card benefits and debt-free life.

Adjust your attitude towards card use. Pay cash whenever it is possible - it is a sure way to stay on solid ground. Resort to an emergency credit card when you cannot do otherwise and make sure you pay the balance in full during the grace period.

Ex-debtors who went through credit counseling agree on one major point - one should reorder priorities in what's more important in life: material possessions or financial wealth. Truly rich people never rush for trendy widgets to stand out against other people. They look simple and often dress like slobs. But they have millions in banks and creditors' trust.

Learn your mistakes and adjust priorities and credit card debt will pass into dim memories.
