Steps to Choosing Credit Cards

By Susan Lou, June 23, 2010

First it was all about understanding credit cards. There was a lot of talk, a lot of hype, debates on whether they are beneficial or not etc. Now, it has found such a common usage among people that businesses are sparing no effort in convincing people to have more than one! So how do you go about choosing credit cards when there are options galore?

Step 1: Understand your Usage

Different people have different purposes for using credit cards. Some use it for business purposes while some others, for personal purposes. Students will have a different expenditure pattern from that of people who use it for their day to day expenditure. The first step is to understand the purpose of having a credit card. This will help you filter out certain credit card schemes.

Step 2: Spend Time to Compare

There are different credit card companies offering similar schemes. Take time to compare between them. Some may seem to be very beneficial due to their introductory offers but may not serve the purpose in the long run. Give special attention to such details while choosing credit cards. Also, take time to understand all the fees and benefits of the credit card.

Step 3: Talk to the Representative

Once you have worked on the foundation and narrowed down on the credit card of your choice, talk to the representatives of the credit card company and get all your doubts cleared. Understand clearly about all their hidden charges and any clauses that you should be concerned about. Do not hold back even the smallest of doubts at this stage. Not everything that you have heard or read from books and magazines can be as reliable as what the representative have to tell you. So make the best of the meeting before finally choosing credit cards.

Once you have followed the above steps in choosing credit cards, chances are that you will have no reason to repent about it in future. While it is fine to seek opinion of others during the process, make sure you do not completely decide based on what they tell you since every individual has his own spending patters. You are the best person to decide on the credit card for yourself. Also, try not to use too many credit cards, but opt for one that provides maximum benefits to you. This will make you so much more responsible along with giving you a sense of independence.
