Using student credit cards wisely

By Susan Lou, September 06, 2010

When you think about student credit cards, one of the first images to cross your mind would probably have to be loans and recurring debts. Often, such images are associated with these credit cards and students are generally scared to go in for them for this reason. But, this is not the truth, and once you do understand all about them, you might be in a better position to decide on your own as to whether or not the credit card is a necessity and something that you might be able to gain from in the long run.

Applying for the right kind

If you are a student, then you should reveal this information prior to applying for a credit card. Often, people make the mistake of not revealing about their student status and end up paying a large amount of money due to this. Hence, it is strongly advised that you make your status known in advance so that you get good rates to work with and not something that is going to cause you to pay a high rate of interest despite not getting any special rates. In fact, student credit cards are often the ones that are cheapest to make use of, which is why you would probably want to go ahead with them.

Making use of the card properly

The next thing that you might want to take care of is to ensure that you don`t simply abuse your card privileges and can actually make use of it in a sensible manner. This would be purchasing books or other necessary items that you can actually utilize in helping with your studies and probably build your career also. Additionally, student credit cards don`t have any kind of interest, which should not be misused. You might want to pay back the debt on time and not have to fact the repercussions of not paying back the debt on time at a later stage.

Hence, keeping all these factors in mind, it is safe to say that student credit cards are definitely recommended, especially if you want to build a good credit score from an early stage and not have to worry about it at a later time. Many people might recommend you to actually think of it from a different perspective, but you need to remember that these cards are known to help people out in the long run, teaching individuals to be responsible with money from a really early age.
