Credit Card Security, Making Sure You`re Protected

By Susan Lou, October 24, 2011

We all know by now that our credit card information isn`t the safest online. Some of us may jump through hoops to protect our credit card information. Because unauthorized charges and stolen identities are not something to fool around with. But did you know that some of the things you could be doing to protect your credit card information might end up working against you, rather than for you.

Giving Your Card to Your Waiter. On a daily basis, the news is reporting a story of credit card theft or credit card fraud. The majority of these stories involve a credit card, a restaurant, and a skimmer which is used to copy the credit card information found on its magnetic strip. It`s important to remember that the restaurant isn`t the one stealing, it`s the employee. If you trust the waiter or waitress you can give them your credit card with a peace of mind, if not stick with cash. If you are ever in a situation where an employee is suspected of stealing your credit card information, promptly inform the manager of the restaurant and the police. Also, make sure to be mindful of your receipts, checking and credit card statements. Those statements have a wealth of information. If you see anything wrong with a payment call the merchant and the credit card issuer to get the problem resolved quickly.

Shopping Online. According to a Center for the Digital Future study conducted in 2010, 48 percent of survey takers were apprehensive to put their credit card numbers online for retail purposes. Protecting your credit card online is one of the best things you can do, but don`t be afraid to access that never-ending online mall. When shopping, make sure the website is secure. A secure website will have 'https://” compared to an unsecured website which will have ‘http://.' Also, browse the website for an outside security company branding.

The Merchant Only Accepts Credit Cards. Sure, paying with cash all the time would be the best way to reduce your changes of online identity theft and credit card fraud. But cash isn`t always the best bet, as people get robbed for their cash all the time. Using a credit or debit card offers your money added protection, because you have to use a PIN number and/or other security measures to access your funds.

If you`re worried about using your credit card in certain settings, don`t fret. Your credit card can be your friend. Like everything, credit cards come with their appropriate risks, but if you know how to deal with the situation in an informed manner then you will make the right decisions. If at any point you feel your credit card security is compromised, don`t wait; call the credit card issuer.
