I have a Hawaiian Air/Barclaycard that gets a lot of mileage put on but I don’t travel on Hawaiian and haven’t really tried to use it for partner airlines. The Aadvantage card on the other hand has perks and is the airline I seem to use the most. It costs quite a bit per year though. My question is do I switch to American or not? Do I get a general travel card, though they don’t have travel perks?

If you do fly a lot with American Airlines, it can be worth applying for the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard. This card has benefits that can be worth its annual fee provided you are going to use these benefits. Also, the miles you earn with the card can cover the card expenses. Simply make some calculations and if the perks are not worth the card expenses, then you may want to get a no annual fee credit card. For example, it can be the Barclaycard Arrival credit card. The card comes without perks but you will earn miles that can be redeemed with any airline, including with American Airlines.
