What the difference is between a store credit card and a MasterCard or Visa. Can you explain how they are each meant to be used?

Answered on

It can be a little bit confusing to understand the difference between these types of cards, for sure. After all, they look the same and both function as credit cards. But a store card, like a Massey credit card, can only be used to purchase things at the particular retailer which issues it, or from their online store. A MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover card that is issued by a bank or directly by the card network itself can be used to make purchases at a variety of businesses – anywhere that accepts that particular credit card network. Visa and MasterCard are very widely accepted and any card issued by them will be able to be used at many different stores, restaurants, bars and other establishments. Store credit cards tend to have higher interest rates and fewer rewards, compared with other types of credit cards.
