American Express has a long tradition of sponsoring entertainment events like concerts, and their American Express Unstaged series partners with online music video service VEVO and YouTube to offer digitally livestreamed concerts to fans and cardholders worldwide.
Grammy-winning artist Usher will debut his new album, Looking 4 Myself, at an American Express-sponsored concert in London on June 11, and fans will be able to create avatars to dance onstage during the show, directed by Hamish Hamilton at the Hammersmith Apollo theater.
The Usher concert with be the ninth in the Unstaged series – previous artists included Arcade Fire, Jack White, Coldplay, and Duran Duran, and concerts have been directed by Gary Oldman, Terry Gilliam, and David Lynch.
American Express cardholders were able to purchase advance tickets for the concert, which goes on sale to the general public today, and they can also download Usher`s latest single, “Scream,” for free through the American Express Unstaged website in conjunction with iTunes.
Hamish Hamilton, who is directing the concert, said that he is “really excited about partnering with Usher – he is an exhilarating performer. Helping to elevate his killer performance, artistic flair, and his new sounds out to the global masses for the ‘American Express Unstaged’ livestream experience will be fun.”
Making light of his relative lack of name-recognition next to more famous directors in the American Express Unstaged series, Hamilton said, “I ain`t David Lynch, I ain`t Gary Oldman, and I’m quite aware of that. But I bring something different. I bring a cutting-edge technological experience and an enthusiasm and a passion to take things to the next level. And also a track record that says, this guy`s done a bit of this in the past.”
Regarding the virtual dancing fans, he said, “Literally, people will be able to create their own avatar and have it dance on the screen with Usher.” Fans can go to the American Express Unstaged site to create their avatar, and during the show, a selection of them will be shown onstage during Usher`s performance of his single, “Scream.”
The avatars were created by Moment Factory, a Canada-based multimedia company who helped create visuals for Madonna`s Super Bowl halftime show.
Card Holder Benefits

Other great benefits for American Express card holders include:
- People who sign up for American Express`s Serve program – a digital prepaid account that can be used anywhere American Express is accepted – get a $25 statement credit when they spend $25 or more on their first purchase.
- American Express card members who sync their accounts with Facebook, Twitter, or Foursquare will get access to special offers that will be announced during the Usher performance.
Premium Card, Premium Entertainment
Even though American Express is known as an elite company and offers amazing rewards for its card holders, they do offer products like prepaid cards that give people the benefits of being an American Express card holder, even if they can`t qualify for one of the more prestigious American Express charge cards. American Express has always offered great rewards on entertainment and music and their “American Express Unstaged” series is just one of the innovative ways they reward their card holders.
