American Express has a long history of pairing cutting-edge and acclaimed film and video directors with today’s hottest performers, and their latest collaboration for the “American Express Unstaged” series doesn’t disappoint.
Last week American Express announced that The Killers – a Las Vegas band made up of Brandon Flowers, Ronnie Vanucci, Dave Keuning and Mark Stoermer – will headline the upcoming American Express Unstaged show in the Bronx on September 18th, and Werner Herzog will direct. Herzog is the acclaimed director of the films Grizzly Man, Encounter at the End of the World, Fitzcarraldo, and many more.
The Killers have a new album – Battle Born – coming out on September 18, the same day as the show, which will be held at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx at 7pm Eastern Time. Their hit singles include “Mr. Brightside, “Somebody Told Me,” and the often-sampled “All These Things That I’ve Done,” all from their 2004 album, Hot Fuss.
Killers singer and keyboardist Brandon Flowers said of the collaboration, “We’re so honored to work with Werner Herzog. He’s made some legendary films and we can’t believe we got him to do this.”
Music + Digital Innovation
American Express Unstaged is in its eleventh installment, and brings music and digital together by live-streaming concerts in partnership with YouTube and Vevo. YouTube, a subsidiary of Google, based in California, is the most popular online video community in the world, and Vevo, a premium music video platform that syndicates content across AOL, BET, CBS, and dozens of other sites and networks, team up to bring the concerts to an online audience. The concerts regularly sell out and tickets are available exclusively to American Express cardholders, who get special access to VIP concert treatment that varies from show to show.
The series launched in summer 2010, and in two years has gained visibility and prestige, showcasing partnerships between artists like Jack White and Gary Oldman, Usher and Hamish Hamilton, and Kenny Chesney and Jonathan Demme. The Usher show offered fans and American Express cardholders the chance to dance onstage with Usher – or at least, a digital version of them got to dance onstage.
The Killers concert directed by Werner Herzog sold out within hours to lucky American Express cardholders. Everyone else can watch the show on YouTube or on Vevo’s free iPhone, iPad, Android or Xbox Live apps.
