Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard Gets an Upgrade

A new name is only the first of the changes the Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard introduced on the one-year anniversary of its launch. Now called the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard, the popular travel rewards credit card comes with a host of new perks—including a longer time during which cardholders can redeem bonus miles for statement credits.

Any travel purchase within the last 120 days is now eligible to be credited when customers redeem miles for statement credits. The previous time limit was 90 days. And more purchases fall under a broader travel umbrella, including bus fares, campground fees, timeshare costs and taxi rides.

EMV makes card more secure, convenient

The card, which has an $89 annual fee that is waived the first year, is also undergoing some key physical changes. The new Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard has been redesigned to be sleeker and sturdier. It also comes with EMV chip technology, making it more convenient to use overseas, where chip-and-PIN technology is standard.

Credit cards made with chip technology are more secure than traditional magnetic stripe cards, which can be difficult to use internationally. Payment kiosks in Europe, Canada and other countries which primarily use EMV technology often do not accept magnetic stripe credit cards.

Another bonus for international travelers: no foreign transaction fees for purchases made abroad.

40,000 bonus miles and double rewards

When new cardmembers spend at least $3,000 on the Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard, they will receive 40,000 bonus miles, redeemable for up to $400 in travel credits. They also get two miles for every dollar spent anywhere, and 10% back on miles redeemed for statement credits.

There are no caps on miles earned, and miles don’t expire as long as the account is in good standing.

Many card benefits unchanged

A number of the card’s perks remain the same. Benefits include:

  • Customers can access their FICO scores for free and receive an alert when their score changes

  • The chance to earn “participation miles” when cardmembers share their travel experiences in the online Barclaycard Travel Community

  • Free subscription to TripIt Pro, a travel organizer app that normally costs $49 a year

  • Concierge service, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

  • Trip interruption/cancellation insurance and car rental collision damage waiver

  • Purchase protection

  • Exclusive ID theft helpline to assist cardholders in the event their personal information is compromised

There is a non-premium version of the Barclaycard Arrival card that offers many, though not all, of these benefits with no annual fee. The Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard is keeping its name, but will come with the same upgraded redemption options and 120-day travel credit redemption window.
