Visa is celebrating the Sochi Winter Olympics with a promotion for new cardholders. People who open a US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa account from January 31 through March 7 will earn bonus FlexPoints every time the U.S. team takes home a medal, whether its bronze, silver or gold.

Racking up points

This promotion is available to individuals who apply for the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa card and are approved during the promotional period.

Each class of medal earns a different amount of points:

  • Bronze medal = 100 FlexPoints

  • Silver medal = 250 FlexPoints

  • Gold medal = 500 FlexPoints

To be eligible, members must be approved and make at least one purchase with their card before March 31. Existing cardholders are not eligible.

The Olympic bonus points are in addition to a 20,000 point sign-up bonus people are eligible for once they charge $3,500 on their card during the first four months of card membership. Add that to the points scored for U.S. Olympic team wins and depending on how the U.S does in Sochi, new cardholders could have a free vacation quickly.

With this card, award travel starts at 20,000 FlexPoints and can be cashed in on 150 airlines. There are no blackout dates or redemption fees with this card, but there is a $49 annual membership fee.

Members also earn one point for every dollar spent, and double points on cell phone charges as well as the category they spend the most money on during the month, which could be groceries, travel or gas.

Visa has been a sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1980 and a worldwide sponsor of the Winter Olympic Games for the last 25 years. Visa is the only card that is accepted at the Olympic Village, but this will end in 2020. US Bank is the fifth largest commercial bank in the U.S., with 3,081 offices in 25 states.
