Foursquare, the social network that lets users check in at their favorite haunts – or any other business where they shop, dine, or otherwise hang out – has offered special savings to American Express cardholders through the Amex Card Sync program. Now MasterCard and Visa cardholders can get in on the action too.
Partnering with MasterCard and Visa will give Foursquare greater access making the brand more visible and hopefully enticing more people to sign up for the location-based social networking service. The addition of debit cards will open up the service to an even wider audience.
Foursquare getting inside more wallets
American Express has been on the forefront of the social networking movement, partnering with Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to offer their members savings and rewards when they sync their Amex accounts with their social network accounts. But far more people carry Visa and MasterCards combined than American Express.
Foursquare is rolling out the Visa/MasterCard deal with the help of CardSpring and First Data. So far, the American Express partnership with Foursquare has given customers discounts and rewards at over 100,000 different businesses in the two years it has been up and running.
Easy reward redemptions
Anyone who has a smartphone running iOS or Android operating service can sync a credit or debit card to get discounts from merchants partnering with Foursquare. If you don’t already have a Foursquare account, you do need to open one. It’s free to sign up and use. Link your Visa, MasterCard credit or debit card to the Foursquare Specials and check for deals at locations where you shop, eat, or have drinks. This will unlock “check-in specials” which will pop up on their screens – like $5 off $20 spent at AMC Theaters. If you check in and spend the required amount, rewards appear as statement credits.
Users do not have to clip a coupon, scan a barcode or even say anything to the merchant when they redeem the reward. This makes the redemption process easy not only for customers, but for merchants too.
