If you’ve got an idea for a project but lack the funds to turn it into reality, American Express wants to help make it happen. The company is giving away $2,000 to 10 people each month for the next seven months through their Passion Project contest.
An American Express LifeTwist study conducted earlier this year found that 75% of people consider the pursuit of their hobbies and passions a major factor in living a fulfilled life. And 69% of survey respondents said that having time to pursue their passions was the key to success.
On that note, American Express decided to ask people what those passions are, and award funding to the folks whose projects are deemed most worthy.
To enter, all people have to do is go to the AmEx YouTube channel and do three things:
- Answer the question: “What’s your #PassionProject?” in 120 characters or less.
- Describe why the project is important to you in 500 characters or less.
- Upload a picture that represents your project from your computer, Instagram or Facebook.
Contest entrants do not have to be American Express cardholders. Each person may enter the contest five times a day, but the entries must be unique. Entries will be judged on creativity and originality (30%), submission quality (30%) and appropriateness to the contest theme (40%).
The $2,000 gift card can be spent any way the winner wants to use it. There is no oversight process governing them after they win, so passion project winners are on their honor to spend the money to support the project they pitched.
The first two Passion Project winners are Scott Harrison, whose project aims to bring clean drinking water to people in developing nations, and Rebecca Lando, who teaches people to make seasonal, sustainable and affordable family meals.
Later this month, American Express will launch a Tumblr blog to showcase inspiring stories, research and advice from industry experts and psychologists.
