Fundraising Never Tasted So Good

This fall, foodies across the U.S. will be able to help raise money for the James Beard Foundation’s education drive, by dining out at local restaurants taking part in the Local Dish.

Chefs from cities across the U.S. have created exclusive Taste America dishes for the event. One dollar from each dish goes to the foundation from now until October 31. Once all the donations are tallied Chase Sapphire Preferred will match the amount raised up to $100,000.

In keeping with the Taste America theme, each dish on the menu is especially designed to capture the culinary flavor of the city where the restaurant is located, whether that’s New York City or Louisville. Cities in over 35 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, are taking part in the event.  A full list of the participating cities and restaurants is available here.

Diners can also take part in the Local Dish Challenge, an Instagram contest, in which they can help a local food charity win a $10,000 donation (or 10% of the total amount raised, whichever is more). Diners snap a picture of their dish and then post it on Instagram, using  the  #JBFTasteAmerica hashtag along with the tag of the city where they live. At the end of the contest, the city with the most photos tagged wins.

The Local Dish program is a part of the James Beard Foundation’s Local Flavor From Coast to Coast Food Festival, which will be traveling to ten cities in the U.S. from September 20 and October 19.  The weekend events raise money for food charities, by holding special dinners on Friday nights for local foodies, while also hosting book signings, tastings and cooking demonstrations. These events feature well-known chefs like Jacques Pépin, Carla Hall, and Ted Allen.

The James Beard Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 by Peter Kump and Julia Childs. It’s named after James Beard, a celebrated chef and food writer. The foundation supports the culinary arts, and provides educational support and scholarships to culinary students. They also give out the James Beard Foundation awards each year honoring American chefs, writers, wine professionals, and cookbook authors.
