Gift Cards Big On Father’s Day Wish List

A nice dinner out, a picture of the kids in a stick frame, and a gift card he can spend at his favorite store spell the perfect Father’s Day, according to the dads who participated in Discover’s latest survey.

When asked what they are hoping for on the big day this Sunday, 46% of dads said they want to go out for dinner. Homemade gifts and gift cards rounded out the top three most-wanted items on dad’s list.

However, it’s a good thing it’s the thought that counts, because dear old dad might be a little disappointed. When asked what they were planning to get the dads in their lives for Father’s Day, 39% of respondents were going with a sports or hobby-related gift—which only 27% of fathers said they wanted.

Only 14% are crafting a homemade gift, while percent of fathers said they were hoping to unwrap something handmade on Father’s Day. But since kids weren’t answering the survey, the disappointment on this one will likely be slight, if at all.

Gift cards a good bet

When it came to gift cards, people were on the same page. Thirty-six percent of shoppers planned to get one for Father’s Day, and 37% of dads had one on their wish list.

If dad gets a gift card, he can spend it on the things he really wants – which are:

  • Music, books or DVDs: 27%
  • Tools or appliances: 27%
  • Sporting or hobby items: 27%
  • Electronics or computers: 20%
  • Travel or a weekend getaway: 20%

How much people are spending

Respondents said they planned to spend an average of $38 to $100 on the various dads in their lives, with men planning to spend the most on their own fathers ($100) and women spending the least on theirs ($38). Women intend to spend more on their husbands ($81). Parents whose sons have kids said they would shell out an average of $39 on gifts for the fathers of their grandchildren.
