Losing Credit Rewards

Losing Credit Rewards

[05:33:36 AM Thursday, May 29, 2008]

New Bill Warns: Watch out for Your Credit Card Rewards!

As the credit card industry's new regulations are coming into force, customers begin to feel their effects little-by-little. And while the positive changes, such as the elimination of unfair penalty fees, hidden charges and "any time, any reason" hike of the interest rates are yet to come, some unfavorable aspects are already threatening the wellbeing of cardholders.

What shoals come with the new credit card laws and do the laws really care about credit consumers? Are their disadvantages meaningful enough to take the back track? Well, if you are a rewards-oriented cardholder, one of the latest bills is certainly out of your line.

One of the bills introduced this spring threatens cardholders' most valuable virtue - credit card rewards. The bill proposes to cap the fees that merchants pay to card companies, such as Visa and MasterCard, to process credit card payments.

At first sight, it is unclear how this regulation might affect cardholders, especially as they are already paying extra which is included into the item price and meant to cover merchants' fees. But in fact, only part of this extra goes to cover the merchant's processing fee - the other part is intended to make up for rewards.

Now, follow the thought. If the merchant fees are capped, the price of the purchase might easily fall. But on the other hand, if the fees are capped, card issuing companies will lose a source of paying for rewards programs. The result is evident and it is reducing rewards offers.

The new regulation will be especially painful for customers who regularly take advantage of point rewards, airline miles, cash back and discounts. A 2006 survey by Harris Interactive, an American market research firm that specializes in public opinion research, shows that these strapped for rewards customers make up about 60% of all cardholders entitled to rewards. The other 40% hardly ever redeem their rewards.

Now that the bill threatens to bereave the privilege of earning rewards itself, these 40% are growing uneasy, realizing what great opportunities they are going to lose. However, while the new legislation has not been accepted yet, you may resort to some credit card smarts which will help you benefit from card use.

  • Make list of retailers that offer discounts if you pay for goods with your credit card. Online purchases at such renowned retailers as Kmart.com and Target.com which work with Visa open up lots of saving opportunities through their discounts programs.
  • Such categories of retailers as travel, gas, medicine and movies allow customers to shop and earn up to 5% cash back depending on what card company they team up with.
  • Use the tools that offer the automation of rewards redemption. Automatic rewards would be of use to cardholders that forget to redeem their points or to credit their cash back earnings to their accounts. Thanks to the automation, rewards are paid out to you on a set schedule which is determined by the card company or yourself.

Hurry to make use of these tips and you will squeeze out all the benefits related to reward programs that your credit company has still on offer.

the automation of rewards redemption is really extremely useful. However, as far as i heard you have to pay a certain charge to get enrolled, don't you?

Beginners Credit Cards

If you've never applied for any form of credit so far, you must be wondering where to begin. Along with the standard requirements for beginners such as being of age, having a Social Security Number and some income, there are others you possibly didn't know about. These are actually your homework and proactive steps to increase chances for the lender's approval. Let's make a brief review of them.

Bankruptcy Law

When approved under the heading "The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005", the new bankruptcy law made it harder for many filers to go Chapter 7. The new provision intended to make bankruptcy law fairer by specifying who actually qualifies for Chapter 7 and who should go through Chapter 13. At that time it caused indignation among those who looked for easy ways to throw off the debt burden, being actually well-paid and having enough income to make payments. These debtors just went under Chapter 7 and had all their debts liquidated.

Credit Card Points

Guess how a bank copes with keeping its loyal and most profitable customers. When the crisis is "booming" and issuers are rolling back extra benefits and low APRs, the availability of 0% balance transfers allows for an easy change of the card provider. No one wants to lose a good risk customer and a bank solves this issue through maintaining and consistently enhancing credit card rewards programs. Points are recognized as the most popular reward type for delivering many more earning and redeeming opportunities. That is simple. When you earn cash rebates, there are only a few options to avail of - get the earnings in a check, gift certificate or direct deposit to your balance or checking/saving account.

Discover Credit Cards

Some of the major US card issuers, Citibank, for example, incurred unbelievable losses stemming from the second wave of the credit crunch. This also caused them to withdraw new applications, cancel inactive credit cards or reduce their limits. Thousands of customers have already been affected, getting their available credit shrunk, APRs hiked and scores damaged as a result of it.

Discover customers are not an exception but things are more lenient and even promising here. Take its Holiday Mall Promotion program in November, 2008 or the launch of a new biodegradable plastic card released in December, 2008. Isn't it evidence that Discover Card is far yet from winding up its offers and benefits? Discover is too big and trustworthy to punish its loyal customers, this is fact.

Credit Card Debt Settlement

Credit is tight, so issuers raise their rates on most deals. All customers suffer, even those who's always had brilliant credit and gained the bank's trust and favor. Those with a shaky financial situation get the worst treatment and continuously see their cards' terms being tougher. In this situation, credit card debt grows to unmanageable level and requires instant settlement to prevent bankruptcy and loss of property.

Debt settlement, while being actively promoted to cardholders, hides some pitfalls and needs a cautious approach by those who seek debt relief without affecting their scores. Often, settlement does impact the scores but the extent of the impact depends on the provider of the service and on the way it all is performed.
