Spotlight: People On Plastic Show Off Unethical Manner

By Jennifer Brown, February 10, 2010
Credit cards have been an essential part of almost everyone's lifestyle. Because of this, most people have been very used to plastic to the point of neglecting that there are still credit etiquettes that need to be observed. An expert of business etiquette and writer of "Manners that Sell", Lydia Ramsey, tackles bad plastic manners that need to be noted and refined by most card holders today.

Exposing Awkward Plastic Manners

Ramsey said that there are numerous people now who are fond of advertising their troubles. According to her, their manner of complaining the overwhelming balance of a certain person in public puts other people around in an awkward position.

Respect should be observed - for oneself and for others - when it comes to discussion of money troubles. Ramsey said that when in public, the best thing for people to do is to talk in generalities such as "These times are really hard." Bringing it to a personal level should be avoided.

Another noticeable awkward plastic manner that is also observed in some individuals is hogging the entire receipts of credit card. Often times, the want of some people to list down their expenses and come up with their own expenses report makes them grab every charge slip - be it theirs or in their group. Such manner is really gruesome according to Ramsey. Instead of hogging the entire receipt, cardholders are advised to keep their own charge receipts only. Asking for someone else's charge slip looks totally unethical.

Ramsey has also observed that there are also some people who love to flash their status card. She said that even though it can really feel overwhelming for a person to have an extra credit account, it does not mean that everyone also needs to know about it. Showing off even the most elite credit card or passing it around is a total crass. Instead of impressing people, this manner will only irritate them. Ramsey advised that such credit cards should be used like other conventional credit cards.

In relation to flashing a status credit card is bragging about one's FICO score. This can be an act of sensitivity especially if the person who is bragging is talking to someone who is struggling from home foreclosure or who has just lost his job. Apparently, the last thing that these people would want to hear is someone's outstanding credit score.

Ramsey stated that it is important for credit cardholders to assure themselves that they are not acting as a Discover d-class or Visa vulgar. This is why she also suggested observing the proper plastic etiquette at all times.
