The plastic credit cards are synonymous to convenience, but there is no end to the number of cases of frauds involving them. Adding to this list of fraudulent practices is the misuse of credit card data in hotels which comes as the latest threat to all card users.
It is reported that hotel chains in the US are the hardest hit by the latest frauds. These hotels have information about their clients in their server to make reservations and other services easier for them. This has become the soft target for hackers who are gaining access to these systems and hence the details about their clients.
Trustwave, the company that works in tandem with various hotels by providing them the protection of reservation systems has confirmed this news. The company revealed that 38 percent of the faults in the year 2009 were due to information made away from the database. This is in contrast to 19 percent in the previous year.
This problem is affecting the entire chain of hotels rather than just one and the proof comes from Wyndham Hotels and Resorts who were targeted by hackers recently. This had a ripple effect by making an impact on 31 of their hotels within a period of two months.
The customers are left unawares about such frauds and feel the impact only a few days or even months later when they scan through their credit reports. Credit card thieves are now targeting the central database storing the credit card information of clients from reservations, spas and golf courses. Accessing this database will give them a lot of information at one go making the clients more susceptible to being swindled of their hard earned money.
This revelation is a sign that clients must get more alert during their transactions. This also calls for judging the situation and giving away any credit card information only when there is a dire necessity to do so.
To minimize the impact of losses when the data is compromised, it is necessary that we check our credit reports on a regular basis. When done regularly, any irregularities or erroneous entries can be tracked with ease and hence save us money.
Technology promises to make life simpler not just for us but as also for those who look out for easy money. Being cautious at all times is the only way we can save ourselves from any frauds.
