Shop at local businesses on Saturday, November 30, and earn a $10 statement credit from American Express. It’s a part of the 4th annual Small Business Saturday promotion designed to get consumers to shop and spend more money at local shops this holiday season. AmEx has teamed up with 1,400 local businesses for the event.
Cardholders need to register their American Express card for the promotion. Registration is limited, so do it sooner rather than later. Visitors can also take a look at the local businesses taking part on the Small Business Saturday Map. The map includes restaurants, coffee shops, garden centers, boutiques and wineries. It will also provide recommendations based on spending history once logged in.
Then on the Saturday after Thanksgiving buy something, whether that’s clothing, stocking stuffers, or even coffee at one of the participating businesses and earn a $10 statement credit. The purchase must cost $10 or more, and be paid for using their registered American Express card.
Online sales are not eligible. Corporate cards and prepaid cards are not included in this promotion. However, individuals with American Express Serve cards can take part.
Shopping smaller is in this season
Nearly half (44%) of AmEx cardholders polled were aware of the promotion, according to the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. And of those that were familiar with the promotion, three-quarters (77%) said that they were planning on shopping locally this season.
While the statement credit was a nice incentive, more than half of respondents said that shopping locally at small businesses was a way for them to support their community as well as the shop owners.
Consumers are pretty savvy and shopping locally also gives them some big pluses when it comes to finding gifts: 70% said that it is easier to find gifts for hard to buy for family and friends at small venues, while 55% said that they get better deals when shopping locally.
The top five stores consumers plan on visiting on Small Business Saturday are:
Food stores (38%)
Clothing stores (35%),
Gift/novelty stores (31%)
The Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey took place between November 1st and November 5th. Redshift Research conducted the survey by interviewing 1,000 adults over the age of 18.
