SONY Launches ID Theft Protection for PlayStation Users

In April, SONY PlayStation users had a little more excitement than they bargained for when 100 million account holders had their personal information breached by a hacker. When the breach occurred, it was feared that credit card information was also stolen. For U.S. customers, SONY is claiming no evidence of this theft, although debit and credit card information from some European customers was accessed from the SONY servers. SONY is now taking steps to say, “We’re sorry.”

Identity Theft protection Offer

SONY is taking the lead to protect the over 100 million account holders whose personal information was stolen by hackers. They are offering free ID theft protection through Debix, an Austin, Texas-based company. Enrollment is not mandatory, but it is an option for PlayStation users to help track any identity theft problems that may arise. PlayStation Network members who are interested in enrolling for the AllClear ID Plus program must do so by June 28, 2011. Enrollees will receive one year of free coverage. The coverage is only available to users that had an account with PlayStation as of April 20, 2011.

Coverage

The Debix plan offers monitoring and surveillance across the Internet to ensure that personal information is not being used. It also reports an identity theft attack to the consumer and the ability for the covered party to take action to stop the unlawful use of personal information. Members also receive priority service to repair identity theft problems and $1,000,000 in ID theft insurance. The insurance covers fraud and some fees, as well as lost wages.

This is the second time that SONY and Debix have partnered. In 2009, SONY used Debix to help 5,200 members of its rewards program that were victims of a credit card scam.
