U.S. Bank Widens Reach, Embraces Android Platform App

Back in April we told you about an iPhone app that allowed shoppers to apply for a U.S. Bank credit card co-branded with REI, but which wasn’t yet available for Android platforms. Android users are in luck however, since this week the app became available for Android devices.

John Owens, senior vice president of U.S. Bank Retail Payment Solutions, said via press release, “The U.S. Bank Card App for iPhone and now Android enables our partners to offer convenience and immediate purchasing power to more customers, regardless of their mobile devices. [We are] continually looking for mobile opportunities to enhance the relationship with our partners and the experience our customers have interacting with us.”

Instant Credit

The U.S. Bank/REI Visa card can be used to pay for purchases anywhere Visa is accepted, but customers will be able to pay instantly only at REI locations. After downloading the free app from Google Play – search for the “REI Visa App” – simply input your information and wait to see if you’re approved for the card. That’s all there is to it, and cardholders can make purchases at REI immediately. The app also lets cardholders manage their accounts, offering account management tools that show recent transactions, account balance, and payment options. Customers can pay their card balance via the app, scheduling them ahead of time so as not to incur late fees.

U.S. Bank also has an app that lets customers easily and securely check balances, transfer money, and pay bills. Their dual interface mobile payment system combines magnetic strip technology, EMV chip technology, and Visa payWave – which allows customers to wave their cards in front of a card reader instead of swiping them.

REI Rewards

The REI Visa card offers great rewards for REI members, who already get 10 percent off all their REI purchases: when they are approved for the U.S. Bank/REI Visa card by May 31, 2012 and make a purchase by June 30, 2012, REI members will get a $100 REI gift card.

REI Visa card holders will also get five percent cash back on all REI purchases including sale items, gift cards, and outlet items, and one percent cash back on all other purchases. That means REI members who use their REI Visa to make their REI purchases will get 15 percent off of everything they buy. Reserve the campsite now!

Impulse Purchases Made Easy

The app, which is the same one that was already available to iPhone users, lets customers apply for a U.S. Bank credit card, co-branded with outdoor goods retailer REI. If approved, customers can begin using the card immediately, downloading a secure virtual credit card to their mobile device and showing it to a sales associate for scanning.

This process is far faster and easier than in the past, when customers had to fill out paper forms and have a sales associate make a phone call to process their information if they wanted to apply for a store credit card on the spot. With mobile payments becoming the norm, and new technology making credit cards easier to apply for every day, impulse purchases are easier than ever.

Just be careful not to get carried away with those purchases. Be sure you have a plan for paying off all the charges you incur on your new U.S. Bank/REI credit card, or you may end up living in that tent and sleeping bag you purchased at 15 a sweet percent off.
