If you have ever wished you could use your points to buy a pizza, pick up a latte, or pay for a yoga class, now you can. American Express cardholders can now use their rewards points on the fly, wherever and whenever they want with the release of the new Use Points for Charges smartphone feature.
Once the American Express app is downloaded onto a cell phone, a customer can use it to redeem their points for anything that costs $1 or more at a merchant that takes American Express.
The new feature is only available to Basic Consumer and OPEN Card Members enrolled in the U.S. Membership Rewards program. Cardholders can take part in this program when they have 1,000 points or more in their account.
How it works
To get started one has to download the free app, which is available in both iOS and Android platforms. Individuals who are already using the app will have to update it to get the new feature on their phone.
Once they pay with their American Express card, folks open the app and hit the “use points” option. Points will be deducted from their account right away, and the amount charged will be deducted from their statement within 48 hours of making the transaction.
Cardholders can also use the app to access their account balance, check out reward options, and make a payment. They can also download special offers.
This new feature is the latest mobile offering from American Express. Last month the card issuer partnered up with VeriFone to allow taxi riders in New York City to use their points to pay for a ride using their reward points.
Members in the American Express rewards program earn one point per dollar spent with their card. Points do not expire and there is no cap on how many points can be earned. They currently offer rewards from 500 brands, including airlines, hotels and car rental companies.
