Walmart Credit Cards Offer Discount on Gas

While gas prices are going through the roof, Walmart is busy “rolling back prices.” Walmart is giving back to its customers by slashing gas prices by 10 cents per gallon. The discount will be available at Murphy USA and Walmart gas stations for the summer driving season.

Reloadable Gas Card

In order to receive the 10 cent per gallon discount, customers must pay with a Walmart gift card, reloadable Walmart MoneyCard or a Walmart credit card. Currently the offer is available through September 30 in 18 states.

The Reason

According to Stephen Quinn, chief marketing officer of Walmart, “Our customers have told us that high gas prices are a top budget concern, nearly as large an expense to their households as food and groceries.”

With gas prices squeezing the family budget, Walmart has noticed that it is also squeezing families’ abilities to spend money on a variety of household items at Walmart stores. At a recent Walmart shareholders’ meeting, the discussion revealed that consumers are spending money primarily on necessities, such as groceries, but not other household products. This is one of the reasons that has led Walmart to make the decision to help out where they can — rolling back the prices on gas — in hopes of spurring spending on some other items in Walmart stores.

For the next three months, at least, Walmart shoppers will have the opportunity to cut back on gas expenses. Hopefully, this frees up some money that consumers can contribute to other areas in life — even a little bit of a splurge now and again. For Walmart executives, they are hoping the splurge is in their stores on items other than groceries.

Not all states are included in the promotion and the notable exceptions are four major ones: California, New York, New Jersey and Florida. Customers can enjoy the discount during the summer travel season in Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
