AAdvantage Members Rewarded for Tornado Relief Donations

The content is accurate at the time of publication and is subject to change.

AAdvantage members, American Airlines frequent flyers, have an extra incentive to give funds to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief program to help people who were affected by a series of tornadoes that swept through Oklahoma, killing at least 24 people and destroying thousands of homes.

When they donate either $50 or $100 to the Disaster Relief fund, they will get a one-time reward of five miles per dollar—that’s 250 miles for a $50 donation or 500 miles for $100. This offer is good through June 30, 2013. The fund will go toward providing shelter, food and other assistance to help people affected by the tornadoes.

What to give

Red Cross staff and volunteers have joined up with Transport Workers Union Local 514 to provide storm relief. Workers have mobilized to distribute supplies and food, open a temporary child care center for parents dealing with the aftermath of the storm, and provide other necessary aid efforts. They have said that the best way for people to help is to donate money. However, folks in the immediate area wishing to donate more tangible items are advised that the Red Cross will accept the following:

  • Bottled water
  • Gatorade
  • Shovels and rakes
  • Work gloves
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Sunscreen
  • Heavy-duty trash bags
  • Plastic storage containers
  • Individually-wrapped snacks
  • Baby formula
  • Canned food and can openers
  • Pet food for cats and dogs
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Personal hygiene items

Credit card holders get five times the reward

members already get rewarded for every dollar they spend on the card, but with this offer of generosity they will receive five times the usual amount. Normally, cardmembers get two miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases and one mile per dollar spent everywhere else.  The chance to get five miles per dollar by donating to the Red Cross makes the decision to donate even easier.
