Dining out is part of holiday fun for many of us, but what if you could help feed children less fortunate by using your credit card to pay for your meal? This holiday season American Express members can do just that. The card issuer has teamed up with Share Our Strength to support their No Kid Hungry campaign.

Every time someone uses their card to pay for a meal through January 31, American Express will donate $1 to the organization, up to $1 million.

$1 = ten meals

One in five children in the U.S. struggles with hunger, according to Share Our Strength. Every dollar donated to the No Kid Hungry campaign can provide a child with ten meals.

“We are passionate about ending childhood hunger in America and we’re proud to support American Express and Share Our Strength,” said restaurateur Danny Meyer, who is a board member of the organization.

How it works

To register, go to the “Dine for a Cause” page. Every time a person uses an eligible American Express card to pay when they dine out or buy food on the go, a dollar goes to the charity regardless of how much is spent.

There are some exclusions. Charges at restaurants that are part of a hotel, located in a department store, or processed through an electronic wallet or mobile card reader don’t qualify. However, if you buy lunch or dinner through an online ordering site like Seamless or Grubhub, the transaction does count. Corporate cards and prepaid cards are not part of this promotion, with the exception of American Express Serve.

Share Our Strength was founded in 1984.  The organization brings meals to kids through school breakfast programs and summer lunches. They also launched a program that teaches lower-income families how to cook healthy meals that won’t break the bank. Last year the charity partnered with the Food Network to produce a documentary about families struggling with hunger in the U.S. and how the No Kid Hungry campaign is trying to help.
