Summer is well underway, with schools out all over the country and temperatures hitting the top of the thermometer. Many people have planned their summer vacations already, but many more are sitting at home, trying to content themselves with a “staycation” because they think they can’t afford a real summer vacation.

If you’re among the can’t-afford-vacation camp, we’ve got news for you: using the right credit card could be your ticket out of town. If you have good credit, there are many great travel credit cards that will have you packing your bags before you know it.

The Travel – Hacking Expert

What sort of perks can you get out of your credit card? Just ask Daniel Tulbovich,’s resident travel credit card expert and “travel hacker.” He hasn’t paid for a plane ticket in years, and circles the globe on a regular basis. Using a combination of bonus points, frequent flyer miles, sign-on bonuses, and other perks, he gets free fares, free bag check, free access to VIP airport lounges, and more.

“Once you know how to play the game, you really don’t have to pay a lot to go on vacation,” says Tulbovich. “Hotels, airfares, special vacation packages – all of these are offered by various credit cards. When you have excellent credit, it’s amazing what you can get for free, just by using credit cards.”

The Best Travel Cards

What are some of the best deals going right now? Whether you need a free plane ticket, a stay in a hotel, or just want those extra perks that make vacation easier, there’s a card for you.

  • British Airways Visa Signature® Card

This credit card gives a sign-on bonus that can be traded in for two international flights or four domestic airfares – just for signing up for the card and using it for the first time. After just one use of the British Airways Signature Card, you get 50,000 bonus miles – enough for a summer vacation beyond your wildest dreams. And if you travel internationally, it has no foreign transaction fee.An annual fee of $95 isn’t much when you consider it’ll buy you airfares worth hundreds of dollars.

  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards card also gives you a free flight after making just one purchase – the sign-up bonus of 25,000 points is good for a round-trip domestic ticket. There’s no catch – just sign up for the card, make a purchase, and you’ve got enough points for one of Southwest’s “Wanna Get Away” fares – worth about $400. The Southwest card has a $99 annual fee, and comes with Visa Signature concierge service, which comes in handy when you are trying to make dinner reservations, arrange accommodations, or find your way around an unfamiliar city.

  • Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card

When you get a Marriott Rewards card, you’ll automatically get 50,000 Rewards points after first use – enough for up to a week’s stay at a Category 1 Marriott property. That’s a value of about $800 – just for signing up for the card and buying something – anything.

Still think you can’t afford a summer vacation? Browse our travel cards section at and follow our travel expert’s example. Take advantage of your excellent credit by applying for one of these cards and remember – all you have to do is make one purchase to get a huge bonus reward.

Not sure what purchase to put on your card? We suggest a new suitcase – you’re going to need it.

Bon Voyage!
