If you have ever wished you could use your Discover card with Apple Pay, you’re in luck. Starting September 16, cardholders will be able to use the mobile payment system to buy a latte, pay for a movie or get a new pair of shoes when checking out at stores across the U.S.
When they do, they earn an extra 10% cash back bonus on up to $10,000 worth of purchases made at stores until the end of the year, on top of their usual earnings. Discover it® Miles, Miles and Escape cardholders will earn 10 extra miles on every dollar they spend, with the same dollar cap.
The bonus is seen as a way to give cardholders an incentive to try Apple Pay and promote Discover’s expansion. “Rewards have always been important to our cardmembers, and we want to make sure they receive a generous offer for shopping with Discover and Apple Pay,” said Heather Roche, vice president of rewards at Discover.
Making it all happen
Once cardholders upgrade their operating system to iOS 9, which is free, they can go into their iPhones wallet app. If their Discover card is already in the iTunes system, it will automatically be added into Apple Pay, once they input their password. If they want to add another Discover card into the system, they can once they are logged in. When all that is done they can start using Apple Pay to make purchases and earn bonus miles and/or cash back.
As is the case with all cards used with Apple Pay, credit card numbers are not stored in the servers at Apple. Instead it’s encrypted and stored in a Secure Element located within the phone.
When a purchase is made the system generates a one-time token or security code, which is used to secure the payment, but no actual card data is transmitted. This makes it harder for data to be stolen at point of sale.
Apple Pay works with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, but it will also work with the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus once they are in stores.
