Sionic Mobile has announced that its ION Rewards app is expanding, allowing users to earn—and redeem—rewards at almost 40,000 locations across the United States. Retailers participating in the ION Rewards program include Barnes & Noble, Dell, GameStop, JC Penney, Lowe’s, Regal Cinemas, and Sephora.
Sionic Mobile is a mobile payments company that created the ION Rewards app to allow consumers to earn loyalty points for using their payment app to pay for purchases. The app is free and can be downloaded from the iTunes or Google Play stores for use on Apple or Android operating systems.
To use it, folks link their credit or debit cards to the app when they set up their account, then use their smartphone or other digital device to check out at merchants with Near Field Communication (NFC) point-of-sale terminals set up.
For every dollar spent using the ION app, users receive up to 3% back in IONs, the loyalty reward currency. These IONs can be spent the same as cash on future purchases at retail locations that accept payments through the ION app. The ION reward points never expire, and there is no limit to how many folks can earn.
The ION app also has a feature that allows people to locate nearby retailers where they can use ION to pay. Users also receive promos and offers through the app. People can send and receive digital gift cards to other ION users as well.
Flexibility of reward redemption
The founder of Sionic Mobile, Ronald Herman, said Sionic “took a radically different approach by focusing on the customer experience and removing layers of restrictions that hinder traditional rewards programs” when they launched their product.
“No other loyalty application allows users the luxury of not only paying with their mobile devices and earning instant universal rewards, but also having choices and control over how they redeem those rewards,” he said.
A person will still earn credit card rewards too—something that people can use to their advantage if they download the ION app and use it in combination with a credit card that offers a rewards program.
For example, if a shopper connects a credit card that offers 5% cash back at department stores with an ION account and then uses ION to pay at JC Penney or another department store that accepts NFC payments through ION, they can earn up to 3% back through ION and 5% back through their credit card.
