A new credit card from First Bankcard and American Express offers shoppers a way to save up to 10% on everyday purchases.

SavingStar, a savings program gives deep discounts on select products online and in-store, is introducing the SavingStar American Express Card, issued by First Bankcard. Members of SavingStar will be able to accrue rewards on top of the discounts they already receive through the program.

If 10% cash back on groceries sounds too good to be true, keep reading. There’s a catch. Cardholders won’t be able to just save 10% on any grocery purchase. They can, however, get 10% cash back on certain products at over 58,000 eligible stores across the United States. They’ll also get 5% cash back from online purchases at the SavingStar Cash Back Mall online, featuring over 900 stores. The card is accepted anywhere that takes American Express, and all other purchases earn 1% cash back.

SavingStar program is free to join

The SavingStar program has been around since 2011 and has over 5 million members. There’s no fee to join, and the SavingStar app is available free for Apple and Android operating systems. Here’s how it works:

  • Members check the web or their mobile SavingStar app for weekly deals and offers at select stores and online, through the SavingStar retailer website link.

  • When purchasing a special offer, members must use their SavingStar membership card or shop through the SavingStar online link. To get the extra 10% off on eligible grocery deals, or 5% cash back online, folks have to pay with the SavingStar American Express card.

  • Discounts are given through members’ SavingStar accounts. Cash credits post to their account between two and 22 days after the purchase. Online purchase discounts usually post within 10 days. Members are alerted via email when their accounts are credited.

  • Members can transfer the balance from their SavingStar accounts to their bank or PayPal account, get an gift card, or donate the money to charity.

The savings from the new credit card will be on top of the savings already offered from the program. There’s no limit on the amount of cash back people can earn. The SavingStar American Express card has no annual fee, and offers a 0% APR on purchases for the first six months.

First American Express secured card

In addition to the regular cash back SavingStar American Express card, First Bankcard has come out with a secured card for people who are establishing or rebuilding their credit. It’s the first time American Express has offered a co-branded secured card. By using the card, members will get all the SavingStar benefits while helping improve their credit score.
