Shopping on Tuesdays can save you money, store brands are just as good as name-brand products, and rewards programs really do pay off.

Those are just a few of the tips that Consumer Reports labeled as the best of 2013 in the upcoming issue of their ShopSmart magazine.  Shopping strategies include:

  • When shopping online, avoid buying on Sundays. Go for Tuesday instead, when online prices are apt to be at their lowest. Sundays are typically the highest-priced day of the week. If you fill up your virtual cart on a Sunday, you will likely find that prices in your cart have dropped when you check back on Tuesday.

  • Skip the big-name brands and choose the store brands. Whether you’re in the market for shampoo or tomato sauce, the store brand is often just as good as the better-known brand—and it’s almost always cheaper.

  • Take advantage of rewards programs. Whether through your credit card or through the merchant, loyalty and rewards programs are worth signing up for. Cash back, special discounts and gift cards are just some of the perks you can get when you use these incentive programs.

  • Get free shipping with American Express. Cardholders get free two-day shipping with ShopRunner. It’s pretty much the same as having an Amazon Prime account, but it’s free for American Express customers. Save the $79 Amazon Prime fee with ShopRunner, or use to get free shipping from over 4,000 retailers.

  • Don’t be shy about signing up for flash sale sites. Websites like, and were big this year. You have to sign up for an email list in order to buy from these flash sale sites. Product availability is not guaranteed, as they are for a limited time only. But the savings can be substantial.

  • Skip gift cards that charge fees. There are plenty of cards from retailers that don’t charge any fees, so be careful when choosing a gift card and avoid the upfront fee.

  • Watch out for restocking fees when returning products. Amazon and Sears are two of the merchants that will charge up to 20% of the purchase price when customers return electronics, media and other select items. Be sure to read the return policy thoroughly before deciding to make a return.

All of ShopSmart’s top tips are listed in the January 2014 issue of ShopSmart magazine, which can be found at Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway and other major retailers.
