United Airlines launched a subscription service that allows customers to pay a yearly fee for Economy Plus seating and checked baggage. An annual Economy Plus subscription starts at $499. The checked baggage subscription starts at $349.
Economy Plus offers more legroom on most aircraft. Travelers can choose their region and the number of travelers they put on their subscription. United is the only U.S. carrier that currently offers an annual subscription for extra-legroom economy seating and checked baggage service charges.
Economy Plus is available on most of the United’s 700 mainline aircraft and 180 United Express aircraft. Economy Plus seating is still complimentary for Premier-level MileagePlus members when it is available.
The basic Economy Plus subscription is limited to flights in the continental U.S. Travelers can have access to all North and Central America flights for an additional $100. Global access costs $699, an additional $200. Customers can pay extra for Economy Plus subscriptions if they want to add additional people. For example, the subscriber plus one companion would cost another $200.
United’s checked baggage subscription lets customers pre-pay their standard checked baggage charges for a year. Baggage check subscriptions can be tailored by choosing up to two bags, the number of travelers, and preferred geographic region.
United Club Memberships
The airline is also now allowing MileagePlus members to buy airport lounge access with miles. United will allow frequent fliers to use their accumulated reward miles to purchase an annual membership at its United Clubs. These apply at all 49 locations and at Copa Clubs and participating Star Alliance airport clubs worldwide.
The United Club memberships have an initiation fee of $50 or 7,000 miles for all new memberships. Prices for one-year memberships begin at $500 or 65,000 miles for general MileagePlus members. Premier members get further discounts.
