Frequent flyers have two new rewards credit cards to choose from this year. Virgin America has come out with a pair of co-branded Visa Signature cards which will offer an array of traveler perks, including free bag check, triple point-earning capability, and the opportunity to reach VIP status faster. The new cards are being issued in partnership with Alliance Data Retail Services.
The Virgin America Visa Signature card and the Virgin America Premium Visa Signature card will both offer a free checked bag for travelers and one companion on all Virgin America flights, 20% off on in-flight purchases including cocktails and entertainment, and triple reward points for every dollar spent at Virgin America as well as one point per dollar on all other purchases. Reward points can be exchanged for free flights and upgrades through Virgin America’s frequent flyer program, Elevate.
The Premium card, which carries an annual fee of $149, compared with $49 for the standard card, will also give cardholders the ability to change their travel plans without penalty. No change or cancellation fees will be charged to Premium cardholders. They will also be able to earn as many as 15,000 points toward Elevate Gold or Elevate Silver status. Elevate Gold and Silver members get priority check-in and boarding, more free checked bags, better seat assignments and free cabin upgrades according to available space.
Cardholders with either the standard or premium cards can also buy one companion ticket per year at the reduced rate of $150.
Sign-on bonus for spending $1,000
When new Virgin America Visa Signature cardholders spend at least $1,000 in the first three months, they will get a sign-on bonus of 10,000 reward points. Virgin America Premium Visa Signature cardholders will get 15,000 reward points when they spend $1,000 in the first three months.
There are no blackout dates or other restrictions on reward point redemption and points can be used on Virgin America’s partner airlines, including Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia. Elevate points never expire as long as the cardholder is in good standing.
Virgin America has been around since 2007 and flies to 21 cities, including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. They just opened their first VIP airport lounge at Los Angeles-LAX.
