Does it make sense
to apply for A SOFT PULL CREDIT CARD?

Above you can see our top five soft pull credit card offers. In most cases, soft credit check credit card, or a soft pull, will not let you avoid a hard inquiry anyway. Typically, soft pulls are used at the pre-qualification or pre-approval stage. Cards with pre-approval or cards that allow pre-qualification is a great way to find out in advance if you have a chance of getting the chosen card or personal loan.

If you then decide to submit the final application, the issuer can make a hard pull. Of course, pre-approval does not give a 100% guarantee that the bank will make a positive decision in the end. However, it reduces the risk of denials and unnecessary hard pulls respectively.

In addition to pre-qualification and pre-approval credit card offers, there are credit cards that do not check your credit at all when you apply. This means that you can get such credit cards without a hard inquiry. As a rule, these are secured credit cards that are supported with a security deposit, so the issuer can trust you more.

If your credit history is not perfect and you don't want to risk and make your situation worse by lowering your credit rate with hard pulls, soft credit inquiry credit cards can be a great choice for you. Moreover, this credit card type can boast many advantages:

Credit Card
Once you get approved, you receive a credit line that you can use for purchases.
No Impact on a Credit Score
Only you can see soft pulls in your credit reports, and they don't affect your score.
Lower Risks
If the card allows pre-qualification, you can estimate your approval odds beforehand.
Credit Building
Your account activity will be reported to the major credit bureaus, which can help you build credit.
Instant Response
Credit cards that soft pull often give a very quick response on your application which reduces your waiting time.

Soft pulls vs hard pulls

As it was already mentioned above, when you apply for a credit card, issuers typically check your credit score to estimate your creditworthiness and then make a decision on your approval. The exception is credit cards with no credit check which do not require any credit check at all.

There are two types of credit check that issuers may run:

1.  SOFT PULL

A soft pull, also known as a soft inquiry, does not affect your credit score at all. Issuers don't have to ask for your permission to make it, so a soft inquiry is often a case when you get pre-approved credit card offers. If you receive an email stating you got pre-approved, it means that the bank has already run a soft pull. Soft inquiries also take place when you yourself check your credit score. Such inquiries are not visible in your reports to anyone except you.

2.  HARD PULL

Basically, most credit card applications, including cash back credit cards, travel credit cards, and 0% intro APR credit cards, ultimately lead to a hard pull, or a hard inquiry. If an issuer makes a hard pull, you will always see it reflected in your credit reports. This type of inquiry does affect your credit score and stays in the reports for 2 years. If you submit too many applications for credit cards or personal loans within a short period, it may significantly lower your scores.

How to choose a soft pull credit card?

Now you know the difference between soft pull credit cards and hard pull credit cards. However, the main question still remains open: "How to choose the right credit card?" Before submitting an application, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the card agreement, including reading the fine print. It will help avoid pitfalls in the future. So, in addition to the type of credit pull, don't forget to pay attention to the following features as well:
Fees
This fee is charged annually for card maintenance. Therefore, the lower, the better.
0% intro APR
A secured card with a 0% intro APR period is a real godsend. Make purchases and pay no interest.
Payment Network
If you don't have much money, the minimum required deposit amount may be decisive.
Build Credit
Check if you can provide an additional deposit and ask for a credit limit increase after a while.
Checking Account Required
Credit checks affect your credit score and may slightly decrease it. No credit check - great!

Alternatives to soft pull credit cards

If you cannot find a suitable offer among credit cards with a soft pull, consider other options. For example, you may pay attention to prepaid debit cards. Of course, they will not help you build credit since they do not report to the credit bureaus. Nevertheless, they can also be a good alternative to cash as they are quite convenient for paying for purchases and bills. Moreover, your credit reports typically won't be checked at all.

Another option is personal loans. With a loan, you get money in your bank account, usually within 1-2 business days, and then pay them back in equal monthly installments with added interest. Unlike debit cards, lenders submit reports to the credit bureaus which can help improve credit history. Many loans also come with soft pulls only. All in all, whatever you choose, make sure that the terms correspond to your expectations and you are able to make all the necessary payments on time.
