American Express has enhanced the Premier Rewards Gold Card when it comes to travel and dining, giving cardholders double points when they eat out. They already earn double points when buying groceries and gas.

With the upgrades people also get a $100 airline fee credit to make up for any charges that they have to pay while traveling, including baggage fees. Transaction fees have been taken out of the travel equation, and they are offering cardholders access to counselors that can give them a helping hand planning their travels whether they are booking a multi city trip or a simpler itinerary.

This upgrade is a way to give people benefits that helps them enjoy life more, spend time with loved ones, and earn rewards faster.  “Whether they’re traveling, dining out or cooking at home, the Premier Rewards Gold Card now gives them even richer rewards, with the flexibility, service, and security they need to keep life moving forwards,” said Lisa Durocher, senior vice president, Consumer Charge Cards & Benefits at American Express.

What comes with the gold

Along double points on eating out, buying gas and groceries, people also earn triple points when booking flights directly with airlines.

Access to the Hotel Collection, which has over 350 properties located around the world in their portfolio, is also part of the benefits that come with the Premier Rewards Gold card. They also get hotel upgrades when they are available, along with a $75 hotel amenities credit to spend on site if they book a hotel in the collection.

Cardholders also get access to other Amex benefits including roadside assistance, car rental loss and damage insurance, extended warranty and purchase protection.din

The annual fee has been raised from $175 to $195. People can get up to five extra cards on their account for no extra fee.

Redeeming points

Cardholders can redeem points for travel, merchandise and gift cards through the Membership Rewards program.

When traveling they can use points to pay for all or a portion of their flight, and there are no blackout dates when booking through amextravel.com. Or cardholders can transfer points. AmEx has relationships with over twenty hotel and airline point transfer partners. Cardholders can also redeem points at certain online retailers, taxis, car services and restaurants.
