News: Self Gifting Is Trending This Holiday Season - Credit-Land.com

Tis the season to shop, but while gift giving is still in style, so is self-gifting, according to a new study by Chase Freedom, with 85% of people saying they will be treating themselves. When it comes to paying for gifts, no matter who they are for, using rewards and points is popular.

The Chase Freedom Study looked at holiday trends, and clearly self-gifting was a breakout result with just about 60% of people admitting that they have spent more on themselves this year than others or that they originally bought something for someone else and decided to keep it for themselves.

Sometimes when you buy something buyer’s remorse kicks in, but for most shoppers (69%) that is not the case this year, with almost half (48%) being really pleased with their personal purchases. If fact, 47% say it makes them happy, while 33% say it inspires them to shop for friends and family, because they get to shop for themselves too.

While 55% of Millennials are more likely to buy something fun for themselves, just 27% of people over the age of 55 will be spending on fun personal purchases.

Paying with points

Paying with cash or points? This season using credit card points or rewards trumps cash when it comes to buying holiday gifts for other people with 60% of holiday shoppers reporting that they will be doing just that this year. But they will also be spending the points and rewards they earn on themselves too.

“We are glad to see holiday shoppers treat themselves to something fun in the spirit of the holidays and are not surprised that many savvy shoppers use credit card rewards to gift themselves,” said Naney Pandit, general manager, Chase Freedom.

A holiday bonus from Chase

To keep this gifting trend going, Chase Freedom is giving cardholders 10% cash back when spending at Amazon.com, Zappos.com, Diapers.com and Audible.com. People can get the extra cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases, starting November 23 through to December 31. In keeping with the holiday spirit Chase is resetting cardholders’ quarterly bonus maximum, so they can get the full benefits of this promotion. But they have to activate their quarterly bonus to get started.

Rewards can be redeemed with the Chase Freedom app, which is available at the Apple App Store and Google Play.
