Read Before You Apply For 0% Balance Transfer Credit Cards

A balance transfer credit card application is a smart move if you have a debt on your current credit card or cards, are paying high interest on it, and most important - are committed to paying off this balance. Before you apply, read on and find out what to pay attention to while choosing a best 0 balance transfer credit card for you; how to use it to your best advantage and make this deal profitable.

Choosing balance transfer credit card offers

Of course, the very first thing you look at is interest rate and the length of the introductory period if it is applicable. To attract new customers credit card companies usually offer a 0% APR balance transfer as an incentive. This promotional rate usually lasts from 6 up to 18 months. After this teaser rate is over, a regular APR is applied to transferred balances. Make sure you pay attention to this regular rate as well.

0% APR on purchases is something you should look for also, especially if you plan to make charges to your new credit card. As a rule, payments are applied to low interest balances first, so your 0% balance transfer will be paid off before your new purchases or cash advances.

Credit card companies usually charge a balance transfer fee that is usually 3-4% of the transferred amount, but can be as high as 5%. Unlike in the earlier days, banks do not set a limit on how high this fee can be, so, if you move a total of $5,000, your charge may run up to $250.

Taking full advantage of your 0% balance transfer credit card

To enjoy all the benefits of 0% APR balance transfers, you should avoid new purchases or cash advances. Make sure you know the order of payments set for your account, and if payments are applied to lowest interest balances first, these new transactions may end up accruing large amounts in interest charges. You definitely do not want that.

Remember that promotional low interest balance transfer credit card offers only last a certain period and if you make a late payment, or exceed your limit, you may lose your low rate.

You can submit a request for 0 balance transfer right with the initial credit card application or any time afterwards. Often the introductory low interest rate is applied to balances transferred by a certain date, any other requests may be subject to different APRs.

Knowing your credit line is also important if you have a large debt to move. A $20,000 balance transfer won't work with a $5,000 limit credit card. Keep in mind that credit limit is usually set after a bank reviews your information.

Also bear in mind that repeated applications for 0 balance transfer credit cards is not the best either. Though you will avoid paying interest as long as promo low interest offer lasts, it can backfire and tell on your relationships with creditors. Besides your cardholder agreement may have provisions against this.

Read terms and conditions to know of any possible pitfalls and ensure a successful transfer.
