It seems like my bank charges high fees for everything these days. Are there any alternatives to having a traditional checking account with a bank?

Yes. In fact, many people these days are looking for exactly that. A prepaid card is a good way to avoid bank fees and still enjoy the flexibility of a payment card. You can do many of the things that you would do with a checking account, such as receive a direct deposit from your job, pay bills online, get cash from an ATM, buy products and pay for services, and transfer money between a savings and a spending account. Depending on the prepaid card, you may even be able to do more than you ever did with your traditional bank account. There is plenty of flexibility with online services widely available, apps for your mobile device, and many different prepaid offerings to choose from. You may be a convert to prepaid accounts after using one for a while, and not want to go back to regular banking.
