I was shopping at my local Gymboree store recently and they asked if I’d like to apply for their store credit card. They were offering a good amount off my first purchase if I was approved. But I didn’t know if the card would be a good one, so I declined. Now I’m wondering if I made a mistake. Should I have applied and saved 15% off my purchase?

You made a good choice. While it can be tempting to apply for a store credit card, there are other credit cards available with just as good, and even better, deals. Instead of saving 15% on your first purchase and then paying a high APR for any balance you carry month to month, you could earn 500 bonus points and get a 0% APR for the first year – a much better deal. Plus, you can use another type of credit card anywhere, not just at one retailer. There are so many great cash back and points rewards credit cards available, why limit yourself to a card that only works in one store? Look around and find a card that will meet more than one need.
