  • Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
  • Earn 2 AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent at gas stations and restaurants

Citi, a Credit-Land.com advertising partner, offers the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® that is a great choice for frequent flyers, especially if American Airlines is their airline of choice. Miles earned can be used toward flights on American or any of its 13 oneworld Alliance partners and a dozen other carriers it has agreements with. Miles won’t expire if you earn or redeem miles at least once every 18 months, and there is no limit on how many can be earned. This card offers a big sign-up bonus and plenty of perks for travelers. Here are the airlines those miles can be used on.

ONEWORLD Alliance Partners

Earning rewards:

Eligible American Airlines purchases earn 2 AAdvantage Miles – 2 miles for every dollar spent. Purchases at gas stations and at restaurants will also bring you 2 AAdvantage miles for every dollar spent. The 50,000 sign-up bonus can get you one domestic economy class ticket.

Redeeming rewards:

AAdvantage Miles can be used toward flights on American Airlines or one of its partner airlines. A round-trip economy class domestic ticket costs from 15,000 miles through American Airlines’ Economy MileSAAver program, or 40,000-60,000 miles with their Economy AAnytime fare. If you want to fly business class, a one-way ticket will cost 50,000 miles for the MileSAAver. First-class tickets start at 50,000 miles. Here’s a chart of the destinations you can fly to and how many miles you will need.

Special offers:

Sign up now and earn 50,000 bonus miles after making $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. You’ll also get 2 AAdvantage miles on eligible American Airlines purchases, at gas stations, and restaurants. If you spend $20,000 or more in purchases throughout your membership year and renew your card, you can earn a $125 American Airlines Flight Discount.

Benefits:

Cardholders can check a bag for free on domestic American Airlines flights. They also get preferred boarding on American Airlines flights and save 25% on eligible in-flight purchases. Cardholders can also add authorized users to their account at no additional cost to boost miles earning potential.

Considerations:

Annual fees are pretty standard for airline frequent flyer credit cards. The annual fee for this one is the same as for the Gold Delta SkyMiles card from American Express - $99, waived for the first 12 months. Delta has a few more options for flights because it is a member of SkyTeam, which has 19 member airlines, compared to American’s oneworld Alliance, which has only 13. The final decision on which card is the best fit for you might come down to location, location, location. Where do you live, where do you travel to, and where do you want to go? American’s main hub is in Dallas and Delta is in Atlanta so keep that in mind for connecting flights as you decide.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®

Credit level recommended: Excellent Credit

APR on purchases: 15.99% - 24.99% (Variable)

Annual fee: $99, waived for first 12 months
