Top 5 travel insurance credit cards March 2026

Travel these days is rather unpredictable. If you travel often enough, you might have experienced a cancelled or delayed flight, medical emergency, or lost luggage. Therefore, it's recommended to always have travel insurance or at least a credit card that provides travel insurance. You might even be using one of such cards to book your trips and may not know you are covered (or what is or isn't covered) by the travel insurance benefit. If you don't have such a card, consider getting a credit card with built-in travel insurance that reimburses you for unexpected calamities. Below are best offers from our partners.

What is
credit card travel insurance?

Credit card travel insurance protects you from unforeseen expenses associated with travel, both domestic and international. You can be covered for things like cancelled or delayed flights, medical emergencies, accidents, lost luggage, and more. Every credit card is different, and the set of coverages can be different as well. You can check the card's terms and conditions or contact the issuer directly to see whether your card offers travel insurance, what it covers, how much it covers, and what exclusions apply.

Protective benefits are usually offered on premium travel credit cards. Other credit cards may not offer a full set of travel insurance benefits but may come with certain travel-related protections. Travel insurance through a credit card only covers the expenses that you charge to that specific card. So if you want to use protections offered by your card, make sure all your travel expenses are charged to that card.

Medical insurance
Covers medical costs if your primary insurance won't cover them.
Lost baggage insurance
The benefit reimburses you for items in your bags.
Trip delay reimbursement
Reimburses additional expenses due to a delayed flight.
Trip cancellation & interruption insurance
Kicks in when you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to unforeseen circumstances.
Travel accident insurance
Covers accident-related injuries and deaths.

What does credit card travel insurance cover?

While credit cards with free travel insurance can provide some protections and give peace of mind if the unexpected occurs while on travel, they do not offer complete coverage. Here are some common situations credit card travel insurance may cover and some common exclusions that aren't typically reimbursable:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption: this benefit kicks in when you must cancel your trip or end it early due to unforeseen circumstances, which can include unexpected health issues, accidental injuries, the death of an immediate family member or someone in your travel party, and severe weather. There are also situations that are not typically covered by this type of insurance. For example, pre-existing medical conditions are not usually covered. Maximum reimbursement amounts depend on your credit card and can vary significantly.
  • Trip delay: a delayed flight may cause additional expenses, such as a hotel stay or meals while you are waiting for your next flight. If you use a credit card that has trip delay insurance, certain reasonable costs you incur during the delay might be covered. To qualify for reimbursement, your original flight must typically be delayed by a certain number of hours. Different credit cards' policies vary on how long the delay must be before the coverage kicks in.
  • Lost or delayed baggage: this benefit reimburses you the cost of necessary personal items while you wait for your checked bag when it's delayed or lost. However, not all items qualify. Jewelry, watches, electronics, cameras, and some other items aren't usually covered. Items like a change of clothes and toiletries are covered.
  • Rental car insurance: when you pay for a rental car with your credit card, you might be able to skip the added cost of buying insurance through the rental company. However, keep in mind that this insurance only pays for physical damage or theft of your rental vehicle. It doesn't cover your liability to other drivers or injuries you may sustain.
  • Travel accident insurance: in case of severe injury or death, you or your family members could receive the benefit if you booked and paid for your trip with a credit card that offers travel accident insurance.

When credit card travel insurance is not enough

Even if you have a credit card that offers a full spectrum of travel protection benefits, you may still want to purchase travel insurance for some trips. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs and concerns. When it is a short trip within the U.S., the travel insurance offered through a credit card may suffice. But if it's international travel and sightseeing is not enough for you, it may be a good idea to opt for a stand-alone travel insurance policy.

Here are some scenarios and trips for which it may make sense to purchase travel insurance:

  • Travel protections you need aren't offered: not all credit cards provide extensive travel protections when you book travel using the card. So, if your card has no travel protections or only offers limited travel protections, you may want to purchase travel insurance.
  • Some travelers aren't covered: travel protections offered by a credit card usually only extend to select relatives of the primary cardholder. Your credit card travel insurance may not cover all relatives, friends, and employees.
  • Your travel includes extreme activities: if the activity you are planning is excluded from most insurance policies (like skydiving, free soloing, or diving), you may want to purchase a travel insurance policy that explicitly includes your activity of choice.
  • You have pre-existing conditions: most credit card trip cancellation and interruption insurance benefits exclude cancellations and interruptions caused by a sudden recurrence of a pre-existing condition. So, you may want to purchase travel insurance that covers your pre-existing condition.
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation: Some evacuation benefits may not cover every evacuation you might need. Thus, if you want evacuation during natural disasters, political unrest, or unforeseen emergencies, you should purchase travel insurance that covers those costs.
  • Cancel for any reason: if you are uncertain whether you'll be able to take your trip and are worried that applicable credit card trip protections won't reimburse you if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a reason that isn't covered, then you may want to purchase Cancel for Any Reason trip insurance.
