New Chase's 5% cash back categories for the fourth quarter of 2024 are already available for activation. Chase Freedom* and Freedom Flex®* cardmembers can now log in and activate new categories to ensure smooth earning of additional cash back in new categories.
The new 5% cash back categories for Q4, that starts on October 1 and through December 31, 2024, are the following: McDonald's®, PayPal®, pet shops, vet services, and select charities. Activation is open now and through December 14, 2024.
The 5% cash back rules remain the same: if you activate, you will earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases within the categories. Once you reach the quarter cap, you will continue earning 1% back in those categories.
However, this fourth quarter there is an exception category for Freedom Flex cardmembers - McDonald's®. Cardmembers will earn 7% cash back on all McDonald's purchases: they will earn 5% quarterly cash back plus their standard 3% on dining (1% base cash back + additional 2% on dining + quarterly additional 4% on McDonald's). Once the quarterly limit is expired, cardmembers will continue earning 3% on dining.
Below, you can see what is included in new bonus 5% cash back categories this quarter:
- McDonald's®: the category includes purchases at McDonald's stores, including locations within third-party vendors, and on the McDonald's mobile app. Delivery and takeout services will be included if they are classified under the McDonald's restaurant merchant.
- PayPal®: this category includes purchases made with PayPal. Payments made through the Xoom transfer service are not eligible for 5%. Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions made with your Chase Freedom card on PayPal may not be eligible for 5%.
- Pet shops & Vet services: here included merchants that provide products and/or services for pet care: pet shops, including online pet shops, sell domestic pets, pet supplies, accessories, pet food, and/or services for the upkeep of pets. Vet Services include licensed practitioners who provide veterinary medicine, dentistry or surgery for pets, livestock and other animals. Doggy day care, pet insurance, and pet grooming will not be included.
- Select charities: this category includes American Red Cross, Equal Justice Initiatives, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Leadership Conference Education Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, National Urban League, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, United Negro College Fund, UNICEF USA, United Way, World Central Kitchen, GLSEN, Out and Equal, Sage.
