PayPass is a contactless way of payment provided by Mastercard. It is a chip and antenna embedded into a Mastercard card or device. The chip stores and processes the payment account data and the antenna transmits data through the air to a Paypass reader and back. Any Mastercard credit card, debit or prepaid card can come with this technology. In fact, Paypass devices can be available in a variety of forms, including smaller-sized 2D and 3D key fobs. The design choice varies with the issuer.
How do I know if my Mastercard has Paypass?
Simply look at your Mastercard card to see if it has a Mastercard Paypass logo on the front or on the back. If you do not see it, you can contact your issuer to find out if they issue credit cards with Paypass contactless.
Where can I use Paypass?
PayPass is accepted globally at merchants, retailers, fast food restaurants, pharmacies, groceries, and even at taxis. Wherever you see a universal contactless symbol, you can use your Mastercard Paypass card.
How to use Mastercard Paypass?
Contactless payments are tapped, not swiped or inserted. When at checkout, look for a universal contactless symbol on the reader. Tap your card on this symbol, look for the green lights, listen for the beep, and go. That’s it, no need to sign or enter the PIN. However, there can be a limit on the transactions above a certain amount and you may be asked to enter your PIN or sign for security reasons.
Paypass Mastercard is convenient when you are in a hurry and don’t have time looking for the coins in your pockets. You would use this at fuel pumps, drive-thrus, convenience stores, vending machines and toll booths, for example.
