All of the major U.S. airlines charge baggage fees that usually range from around $30 to $50 for a first checked bag on domestic flights. The cost can climb fast if you travel often or with family. Luckily there are ways to avoid paying for checked bags, and one of the easiest is by having the right credit card in your wallet.
Many airline co-branded credit cards include a free checked bag benefit. Plus, some travel credit cards can offer various benefits that can help cardmembers offset baggage fees.
Here we pulled together standard checked bag fees of some popular U.S. airlines and their credit cards that offer a free checked bag perk.
- United Airlines: $45-$50 for the first checked bag. Consumer cards that offer at least a first checked bag free: United℠ Explorer Card, United Quest℠ Card, and United Club℠ Card.
- American Airlines: $45-$50 for the first checked bag. Consumer cards that offer at least a first checked bag free: Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®*, Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe Mastercard®, Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®*.

If you are not loyal to any airline, then a travel rewards credit card can be a better choice. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®* card comes with a general travel credit of up to $300 each account anniversary year that can be used toward checked bag fees.
Travel credit cards usually allow you to redeem earned rewards towards travel expenses. For example, with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card you can redeem points for a statement credit to pay for baggage fees.
