With so many airlines changing their frequent flyer program rules, Delta is not an exception. There are big changes coming to the SkyMiles program, including to Medallion status earning and Sky Club access policies. New program rules will take effect on January 1, 2024. Read on to learn more about key changes.
Those loyal Delta flyers who fly often enough to earn Medallion Status are now promised simplified ways to do it. Delta is retiring Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) and Medallion Qualifying Segments (MQS), and starting January 1, 2024, Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) will serve as the only qualifier for Medallion Status.
Going forward, there will be more ways to earn MQDs, including through Delta- and partner-operated flights, Delta rental cars, hotel stays booked through Delta.com, Delta Vacations experiences, and MQD Boost benefit with select Delta SkyMiles American Express cards. The MQD thresholds to earn Medallion status for 2025 will be as following in 2024: Silver Medallion - $6,000 MQDs, Gold Medallion - $12,000 MQDs, Platinum Medallion - $18,000 MQDs, Diamond Medallion - $35,000 MQDs.
Delta is also updating its Delta Sky Club access rules for some American Express card members. Thus, starting February 1, 2025, Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express card members will receive 10 Club visits per Program year. The Platinum Card® and the Business Platinum Card® from American Express card members will receive 6 Club visits per Program year.
These members can earn unlimited Club access after spending $75,000 in eligible purchases on their eligible Card in a calendar year and will have unlimited Club access for both the remainder of the current program year (which ends on January 31) and for the next full program year. Spend tracking begins January 1, 2024, for the 2025 Medallion year.
Those who have the Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Platinum Business American Express card and are traveling in Basic Economy, regardless of card type, will not be eligible for Club access starting January 1, 2024.
Those SkyMiles members, who have MQMs accrued during 2023 won't lose them. Delta will offer to convert MQMs into redeemable miles (at a rate of 2:1), MQDs (at a rate of 20:1) or a mix of both.
Additionally, Delta will be adding new Choice Benefits, which are awarded to Platinum and Diamond Medallion members after earning the status. The new benefit choices haven't been disclosed yet, though.
Unfortunately, not many Delta frequent flyers will like these changes, and probably even fewer will win from those updates. Many Medallion members may drop to lower status tiers, if not find alternative ways to save on air travel.
