Gas station credit cards or
rewards credit cards?

Many gas stations offer branded credit cards that may help you save money at the pump. But are they really good at it? Will you benefit from having a gas-branded credit card? Let's take the 76® Personal Credit Card It may save you a lot but only at 76® locations, which already limits your options. If you compare the 76 credit card with a regular gas rewards credit card, you will see the difference, and which card is the best credit card for gas rewards.

Expert's opinion

The no annual fee Discover it® Cash Back card has rotating category bonuses that change every year and gas purchases appear in the bonus category once a year. Earnings in categories are as high as 5% cash back up to the quarterly maximum (activation is required). That means you will earn 5% cash back on gas purchases at least one quarter each year - unbeatable offer for those who are planning to be on the road sometime in the near future. The base rewards are 1% cash back.

Excellent/Good Credit

Why rewards cards are
more flexible THAN GAS ONLY
CREDIT CARDS?

Rewards Earning
REWARDS EARNING

Gas station credit cards usually give a gallon-based discount not a percentage of the total cost of a purchase transaction. So, when the gas prices go up, your earnings will actually go down if you use gas only credit cards. For example, the 76® Personal Credit Card allows you to 5 cents on every gallon but only at participating 76® and some other partners' gas stations and only if you make 45-110 gallons of Fuel Purchases in the billing cycle. Gas rewards cards work differently. They reward you for each dollar spent meaning the more you spend, the more you earn. Best gas rewards cards give from 2% to 5% rebates on gas purchases and at least 1% rebate on everything, which is much higher that co-branded rewards only.

Easy Redemption
EASY REDEMPTION

When you use a gas station credit card, you either get instant discount or earn rewards that can be later redeemed as fuel credits or statement credits towards gas purchases only. Everything you earn with a gas branded credit card can be redeemed towards gas only. A gas rewards credit card can offer more redemption options and won't require you to redeem all earned rewards for gas purchases. With a gas rewards credit card, you can choose to redeem for cash, gift cards, statement credits, merchandise or travel, depending on what options are offered with the card.

Lower Interest Rates
LOWER INTEREST RATES

Gas-branded credit cards may have easier approval but have high annual percentage rate (APR). The reason behind this is that they are often approved to people with fair credit who are looking to rebuild their credit. People with good credit are not approved for lower APRs, they are also given high interest rates - gas branded credit cards make no exceptions. Carrying a balance on these credit cards is very expensive. So, if your credit is good and if you do not have a habit of paying off the card balance in full each month, you may want to get a better credit card that will give you a lower interest rate.

GAS CREDIT CARDS

** When credit card savings are given per dollar spent and not per gallon, the savings per gallon are calculated based on an average price per gallon in the U.S. To calculate savings per 1 gallon, we take the current U.S. average gas price and multiply it by gas savings per dollar the card offers. The U.S. average gas price per gallon that we use is $2.75
