News: Citi Strata Cards Get Bonus Eligibility Rules Updated - Credit-Land.com

Citi made welcome offer eligibility rules for its Strata suite of credit cards much stricter. More specifically, Citi limited the possibility of earning a sign-up bonus to once per card.

The new more restrictive welcome offer rules replaced the old 48-month waiting period between welcome bonuses. Luckily, other Citi cards still carry the 48-month language, meaning you still can earn a welcome bonus after a waiting period ends.

Here's what we know about the recent change to the bonus rules of Strata-braded cards:

  • Citi Strata Elite℠ Card: New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Elite® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.
  • Citi Strata Premier® Card: New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.
  • Citi Strata℠ Card: New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata® or a Citi Strata Student account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.

Additionally, Citi is now showing a new pop-up that notifies you if you are not eligible for the new account bonus even if you pre-qualified for the credit card. It gives you the option to proceed without a bonus or cancel the application. It's nice that Citi makes it clearer for applicants if they are or aren't eligible for the bonus.

The new bonus eligibility rule, however, does not restrict you from earning a welcome offer on each Strata card. Each Strata card is still a separate opportunity. That means you, as a first-time applicant, should be able to earn all three bonuses across the Citi Strata Card, Citi Strata Premier Card, and Citi Strata Elite Card.

The limiting language is becoming increasingly common on rewards card application pages. We encourage you check the eligibility rules every time you are considering a new credit card with a welcome offer.
