News: Walmart Broke Up With Capital One: Which Card To Use At Walmart Now - Credit-Land.com

Capital One was an exclusive issuer of Walmart Rewards credit cards for several years. However, Walmart and Capital One ended their credit card agreement in March 2024. Luckily, current cardholders of Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card* and the Walmart Rewards® Card* can continue to earn and redeem rewards and can also continue to use their cards.

While Capital One will continue servicing active Walmart credit card accounts, they also announced big changes to the cards. In this regard, it may be a good time to consider alternative cards that earn rewards on Walmart purchases.

Unfortunately, there are no new Walmart credit cards you could apply. However, you can apply for a general rewards credit card. Of course, no cards on the market offer earning rates better than the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard. Many cards even specifically exclude Walmart and other big retailers from their categories with elevated rewards earning. Still, there are some credit cards that can earn decent rewards on Walmart purchases.

Below are our picks for Walmart card alternatives:

  • Discover it® Cash Back: this card has 5% cash back (up to the quarterly maximum) categories that change every quarter and grocery stores or even specifically Walmart purchases may earn 5% cash back once a year. For example, this year Walmart was in Q3. The only requirement to earn elevated cash back is to activate 5% categories each quarter.
  • Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card: this card offers 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, plus 3% cash back in the category of your choice (up to $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club quarterly purchases).
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: this travel rewards credit card earns 3x points on online groceries, which is a strong rewards rate for those who use online platforms for grocery shopping.
  • U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards® Visa Signature® Card*: this card earns 6% back on your first $1,500 in combined eligible purchases each quarter with two retailers you choose. Plus, you can earn 3% cash back on your first $1,500 in eligible purchases on your choice of one everyday category (like wholesale clubs, gas and EV charging stations, bills and utilities).
