News: British Airways To Change Avios Earning - Credit-Land.com

Many major US airline loyalty programs have already moved to revenue-based miles earning for flights. Now, British Airways Executive Club is joining them and will allow you to earn Avios per flights based on the amount paid rather than distance travelled.

As of October 18, 2023, British Airways will transform the way Executive Club members earn Avios for flights. Thus, for flights booked on or after October 18, Executive Club members will earn Avios depending on the airfare, the type of ticket, the type of cabin, and the tier status.

Here's how many Avios members will be able to earn depending on their elite status (one British pound is about $1.30):

  • Blue members will receive 6 Avios per qualifying £1 spent
  • Bronze members will receive 7 Avios per qualifying £1 spent
  • Silver members will receive 8 Avios per qualifying £1 spent
  • Gold members will receive 9 Avios per qualifying £1 spent.

In addition to airfare, members will earn Avios when purchasing additional items such as upgrades, pre-paid seat selection, and excess baggage. However, government fees and taxes will not earn Avios on any tickets.

If you fly with partner airlines (without a British Airways flight number) including Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, you will earn Avios at current rates based on miles flown.

The new revenue-based system will apply to British Airways-marketed flights only. If you fly with partner airlines (booked without a British Airways flight number), you will continue earning Avios the way you're doing it now, nothing will change here (at least for now).
