Some things stay the same

While this is a change for cardholders, they can also opt to keep using the current system for redeeming miles. The old system lets them use their miles to pay off travel expenses charged to their credit card if they do not want to use their miles directly with the airline they are flying with or they want to use a different carrier while traveling.

This option also makes it possible to use their miles to pay off non-airline based expenses, including hotels, rental cars, cruises and of course flights.

With this option, their miles are also redeemed for their full value, which for Capital One means that each point is worth 1 cent when using points to pay off travel expenses. On the other hand with the transfer partner option offers them a transfer rate of 1 credit card mile for 1 airlines mile in most cases.
