It's becoming more challenging to earn welcome bonuses on many popular credit cards, and the Venture family of credit cards has joined the club. Capital One has implemented a 48-month welcome bonus eligibility rule across its Venture credit cards.
This rule includes the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card ($0 annual fee), the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card ($95 annual fee), and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card ($395 annual fee). It essentially limits cardholders from downgrading their Venture card with a high annual fee to another Venture card with a lower or no annual fee. However, cardholders can still go "upwards" (from a no-annual-fee Venture card to a higher-annual-fee Venture card) without any limitations.
In practice, here's how the rule plays out for each card:
- If you are applying for the VentureOne card: You are not eligible for the card if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One VentureOne card, the Capital One Venture card, or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.
- If you are applying for the Venture card: You are not eligible for the card if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.
- If you are applying for the Venture X card: Existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible for the card if they have received a new cardmember bonus for the Venture X card in the past 48 months.
With this new rule, Venture X cardholders who have opened the card and received the bonus in the last 48 months are the most affected as they will not be allowed to open a VentureOne or Venture card until this waiting period expires.
If you currently hold or have a recently closed Capital One Venture card, make sure you check the bonus history before submitting a new application. This simple action can help you avoid unnecessary frustration of walking away empty-handed.
