What are
rewards credit cards?

A rewards credit card is one that lets you earn points, miles or cash back from every dollar you spend on purchases. The number of rewards you can earn per dollar spent can vary depending on the type of credit card you have. There are cards that offer fixed rewards no matter what you buy or where you shop. However, many credit cards come with reward programs that allow you to earn elevated rewards in different shopping categories like travel, department stores, grocery, restaurants, or other categories.

Those are everyday rewards (rewards you earn for your everyday expenses). Rewards credit cards can also come with generous welcome bonuses (sign-up offers), which are usually given in a lump sum after you open a new card and spend a required amount within the first few months of signing up for the card.

Rewards Bonus
A sign-up bonus can give you a head-start on accumulating rewards.
Everyday Rewards
You can earn points/miles/cash back on every dollar you spent on purchases.
Rewards Categories
A rewards credit card can offer increased rewards in select shopping categories.
Fixed Rewards
A rewards credit card can offer a set percentage of your spending back on all purchases.
Rewards Value
The value of earned rewards may be fixed or vary based on the redemption option.

What type of rewards can you get?

All rewards credit cards earn some type of reward. Rewards vary from card to card, so you can simply choose the kind of rewards you would like to earn. Here's what you can earn with rewards credit cards:

Points - These are the issuer's currency and you will have a number of redemption options to use your points for. Points can also be transferable or be a part of a loyalty program. If you have a co-branded credit card, you'll earn points for a specific loyalty program, typically for an airline or hotel. Transferable points can be transferred to certain partners to maximize their value.

Miles - These are not pure miles flown as it was before with certain programs. Today, miles rewards are the same points rewards, but under a different name. Miles usually act and work like point rewards.

Cash back - This is the most straightforward type of reward. You simply get a percentage of each purchase back. This percentage can be fixed for all purchases or may vary for certain categories (based on the program you choose). Cash back can be redeemed as pure cash, statement credits, or more.

Crypto - This is a new type of reward that has appeared quite recently but is gaining popularity. Crypto rewards can be earned in the form of a specific cryptocurrency, like bitcoin, or as points redeemable for crypto. Crypto rewards may have only one redemption option - cryptocurrency, and often it can be only one cryptocurrency.

What to look out for?

Rewards credit cards may have higher costs than other credit cards. For example, it's common for rewards cards to have annual fees, and the better the rewards, the higher the fees may be. More than that, rewards credit cards may have higher interest rates. However, they might as well offer 0% intro APRs on purchases. Anyway, the rewards credit card is not the card you would want to carry a balance on. If you do carry some balance, the interest can eat all your rewards.

Also, do not forget about the fine print of the rewards program terms. Some cards may limit the rewards you can earn at a higher rate. Redeeming rewards cannot be easy as well. Once you are ready to redeem rewards, you may be set back by restrictions, caps, or minimum redemption amounts.

Not all rewards will stay there for you forever. Depending on the rewards program, rewards can expire if you do not show some qualifying activity or close your credit card account. The best rewards programs do not let your rewards expire, even when you close your credit card.

Rewards Limits
There may be limits to the rewards you can earn monthly, quarterly, or annually.
Redemption Options
You may see limited options, minimum redemption amounts, or other restrictions.
Rewards Expiration
Read the fine print to know if and when your rewards expire and how to avoid that.
0% Intro APRs
If a rewards credit card has a promo APR, don't forget that it will expire eventually.
Fees
Big rewards may mean high annual fees. Just make sure rewards will be able to offset the fees.

Rewards credit cards for bad credit

There are not many credit cards with rewards for people with bad credit. However, it doesn't mean you won't be able to find one. Just be ready for limited rewards options or some basic rewards like 1% back per dollar spent on purchases. Also, keep in mind that rewards credit cards for bad credit will likely come with annual fees and higher interest rates. So if you are not planning to pay off the card balance in full, it may be worth looking for cheaper credit cards. Make sure you prioritize the right things, and you won't end up hurting your score even more by getting a rewards credit card.
